People from across Coventry and Warwickshire could be heading for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games after a new scheme was launched.
Henley College Coventry in Bell Green will offer a range of free courses aimed at helping unemployed people in the region into the sports and events industry.
The courses are part of the Personal Best Programme, a training and volunteer programme inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which aims to help those without employment gain new skills.
The courses will help people improve their job prospects and get interviews for volunteering opportunities at the 2012 Games. Up to 70,000 volunteers are needed to support the London 2012 Games and those who complete these courses will be guaranteed an interview.
Stuart Thom, assistant programme manager at Henley College Coventry, said: “We are delighted to be involved in such an exciting initiative aimed at raising skills levels and motivating out of work people in Coventry to improve their employability.
“The courses are expected to fill up quickly, so we would urge people to get in contact as soon as possible.”
The courses are funded by the region’s European Social Fund programme and backed by a partnership including the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) West Midlands, West Midlands Leaders Board, SkillsActive, Advantage West Midlands and Jobcentre Plus.
Tom Clift, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership manager for the 2012 Games, said: “The 2012 Games will have benefits that reach far beyond London and the Personal Best Programme is a prime example of how the Games can have a positive effect on people in our region.
“This scheme provides people with the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the 2012 Games while also dramatically increasing their job prospects and we are delighted to support Henley College Coventry in the delivery of this programme.”
Those completing the course will also have the opportunity to volunteer at local sporting, cultural and community events in the run up to the Games and possibly gain employment in the fitness industry.
The first course, Active IQ Level 1 Award in Active Healthy Lifestyle, runs from February 1 to March 16.
The second, Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership, begins on April 12 and finishes on May 10.
The final course, Active IQ- Level 1 Award in Preparation for Event Volunteering, with a guaranteed interview to work at the 2012 Games, starts on May 6 and ends on July 9.
