Coventry City Council

Since the announcement of London winning the bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2005, Coventry City Council has been supporting local London 2012 programmes and initiatives to involve, inspire and engage communities and businesses across the city.

On June 3, 2010 London 2012 made an announcement that the City of Coventry Stadium will be the new Midlands venue as one of six UK wide cities to host Olympic Football as part of the 2012 Games. This once in a life time opportunity has put Coventry into a very prestigious position as the city now has the honour and pride of being known as a co-Host City for the London 2012 Games. 

Between 2006-May 2011, Coventry City Council was the primary funding partner of the Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games, (CW2012) a unique combination of private, public and voluntary organisations working together to maximise the opportunities around the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Partnership involved the key organisations across the sub-region and was established to ensure that Coventry & Warwickshire derives real benefits before, during and after the Games, by providing leadership and identifying tangible opportunities to contribute to making the 2012 Games a real success.

Focusing on maximising the opportunities around the key areas of Sport, Culture, Business, Tourism, Education and Pre-Games Training Camps, Coventry and Warwickshire arguably now has the most extensive 2012 Games engagement programme when compared to any other City outside of London.

As we now move towards Games Time and operational readiness, we would like to thank all the organisations that funded and supported the 2012 Partnership at some point between 2005 and 2011.

In the final build up to the Games, Coventry City Council and NHS Coventry are now continuing the project funding to ensure that the programmes are carried through until the London 2012 Games.
