The London 2012 Olympic Football competition came to Coventry and brought with it thousands of visitors during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in July and August 2012.

575 appplications were received from local people wanting to welcome the world to Coventry for London 2012. More than 300 applicants were interviewed and selected to be volunteers, with roles such as team leaders, linguists and general ambassadors who were based at key city centre locations and in the last mile leading up to the City of Coventry Stadium during Games Time.

 

Coventry Ambassadors also supported the Olympic Torch Relay on days 44 and 45 as part of the cities evening celebration and morning departure events and the cities Paralympic Flame celebration event on the 25 August.

 

We would like to give a huge thank you to every Coventry Ambassador who played such a crucial part in making over 170,000 people's Olympic and Paralympic experience in Coventry one they will never forget. Thank you for all your efforts and we hope you enjoyed being part of history in your city. You certainly gave so much joy, friendship and pleasure to people from across the world.

Coventry Ambassador Role:

Coventry Ambassadors had three main duties.

 

      1. Supporting key London 2012 events:

Olympic Football fixtures 25 July – 9 August

Olympic Torch Relay evening celebration event, 1 July 2012

Olympic Torch Relay morning departure event, 2 July 2012

Live Site Big Screen events

Paralympic Flame celebration event, 25 August 2012

 

      2. Hosting visitors:

Signposting to key city centre attractions

Welcome at key transport interchanges

Information and assistance / enquires

Guidance on routes to Olympic venue

 

      3. Acting as an Ambassador for the city:

Friendly, helpful, informative and polite

Creating the right impression of Coventry

Being welcoming, being positive and being proud!

 

Coventry Ambassador types:

There were three types of Coventry Ambassador.

 

Coventry Ambassador:

Acting as friendly and efficient host to spectators and other visitors to Coventry during the Olympic Games offering assistance to all.

 

Coventry Ambassador Team Leader:

Responsible for leading a small group of Ambassadors during London 2012 events in Coventry ensuring that all tasks are undertaken appropriately and safely.

 

Coventry Ambassador Linguist:

Offering clear and accurate information for non-English speaking visitors during Games time ensuring that people arrive at their destination on time and navigate easily around Coventry.
